The Science of Metaphysics
Richard Maurice Bucke (1837 – 1902), MD, Cosmic Consciousness: A Study in the Evolution of the Human Mind (E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc., 1969). A classic investigation of the development of man’s mystic relation to the infinite. Carlos Castaneda (1925 – 1998). Castaneda often referred to what he called nonordinary reality, a realm that was radically different from the reality experienced by most human beings who, as part of their social conditioning, are preoccupied with their everyday activities. www.castaneda.com Ernest Holmes (1887 – 1960), et al, The Collected Works of Ernest Holmes, Charles Fillmore (1854 – 1948), William Walker Atkinson (1862 – 1932), James Allen (1864 – 1912), and Henry Drummond (1851 – 1897). Pioneers in The New Thought Movement, a spiritual movement that developed in the United States during the late 19th century and emphasizes metaphysical beliefs that promote the idea that God is ubiquitous, that divinity dwells within each person, that we are all spiritual beings, and that the highest spiritual principle [is] loving one another unconditionally. www.newthoughtlibrary.com Harold W. Percival (1868 – 1963). In 1893 Percival had the unique experience of being “conscious of consciousness,” a potent spiritual and noetic enlightenment. He stated: “Being conscious of consciousness reveals the ‘unknown’ to the one who has been so conscious. Then it will be the duty of that one to make known what he can of being conscious of consciousness.” His works represent a towering accomplishment in addressing the true state, and potential, of the human. His complete system of thinking is contained in a one-thousand-page masterpiece, produced over a period of thirty-four years and entitled Thinking and Destiny, first published in 1946, © The Word Foundation. www.thewordfoundation.org Rudolph Steiner (1861 – 1925). An Austrian philosopher, literary scholar, educator, artist, playwright, social thinker, and mystic, Steiner offers a spiritual philosophy he called anthroposophy. HE postulates the existence of an objective, intellectually comprehensible, spiritual world accessible to direct experience through inner development, more specifically through conscientiously cultivating a form of thinking independent of sensory experience. In its investigations of the spiritual world, anthroposophy aims to attain the precision and clarity of natural science’s investigations of the physical world. Steiner's books are available at www.rsarchive.org Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881 – 1955),A French philosopher and Jesuit priest, Teilhard sets forth a sweeping account of the unfolding of the cosmos in his primary book The Phenomenon of Man (Editions de Seuil, Paris, 1955). He abandoned traditional interpretations of creation in the Book of Genesis in favor of a less strict interpretation. In The Future of Man ((Editions de Seuil, Paris, 1959), Teilhard presents his philosophy and belief that man is evolving spiritually from a simple faith to a higher form of consciousness, including a Consciousness of God. In 1925, Teilhard was ordered by the Jesuit Superior General to leave his teaching position in France and to sign a statement withdrawing his controversial statements regarding the doctrine of original sin. This was the first in a series of condemnations by certain church officials, with the climax of these condemnations with a 1962 monitum (reprimand) of the Holy Office denouncing his works. See information regarding his collected works at www.teilharddechardin.org Eckhart Tolle (1948 – ) presents an honest look at the current state of humanity and argues that this state, which is based on an erroneous identification with the egocentric mind, is one of dangerous insanity. He believes that the feeding of the human ego is the source of inner and outer conflict and that only in examining one’s ego may people begin to see beyond it and obtain a sense of spiritual enlightening or a new outlook on reality. Books include A New Earth (Penguin, 2006), The Power of Now (New World Library, 2004), and Stillness Speaks (New World Library, 2003). www.eckharttolle.com The Science of Consciousness Itzhak Bentov (1923 – 1979), A Brief Tour of Higher Consciousness (Destiny Books, 2000), and Stalking the Wild Pendulum (Destiny Books, 1977). Bentov was a Czech-born scientist, inventor, mystic, author, and an early exponent of what has come to be referred to as consciousness studies. Robert Allan Monroe (1915 – 1995). In 1975 Monroe registered a patent for an audio-visual device designed to stimulate brain functions until the left and right hemispheres became synchronized. Monroe held that this state, dubbed Hemi-Sync (hemispherical synchronization), could be used to promote mental well-being or to trigger an altered state of consciousness. He is credited with popularizing the term “out-of-body experience”. His books include Journeys Out of the Body (Broadway Books, 1971), Far Journeys (Broadway Books, 1992), and Ultimate Journey (Three Rivers Press, 1996). The Science of Reincarnation Deepak Chopra, MD (1946 – ). Chopra tells us that there is abundant evidence that “the world beyond” is not separated from this world by an impassable wall; in fact, a single reality embraces all worlds, all times and places. Ultimately, there is no division between life and death. At the end of our lives, we “cross over” into a new phase of the same soul journey we are on right this minute. In his book, Life After Death (Random House, 2006) Chopra draws on cutting-edge scientific discoveries and the great wisdom traditions to provide a map of the afterlife. It’s a fascinating journey into many levels of consciousness. But far more important is his urgent message: “Who you meet in the afterlife and what you experience there reflect your present beliefs, expectations, and level of awareness. In the here and now you can shape what happens after you die.” www.chopra.com Michael Newton, PhD (1951 – ). Founder of the Dr. Michael Newton Institute for Life Between Lives, and author of the best-selling books Journey of Souls (Llewellyn, St. Paul, MN, 1994), Destiny of Souls (Llewellyn, 2000), and Life Between Lives (Llewellyn, 2004). www.michaelnewtonphd.com Religion Archbishop Wake (1657 – 1737), Forbidden Books of the Original New Testament (http://www.gutenberg.org Ebook #6516).
